FIFA imposed significant bans on three Argentina players on Friday. Midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest sanction, a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine for grabbing Spain's Eric García by the throat and pushing Gavi. Defender Nahuel Molina was banned for seven games and fined $90,000, while Thiago Almada got a one-game ban and a $30,000 fine. An Argentina coach, Roberto Ayala, also received a three-game suspension.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was fined $110,000 for multiple incidents during the tournament. These included players displaying a political banner about the Falkland Islands after their semi-final win over England and discriminatory chants by fans. FIFA also ordered the AFA to spend $100,000 on anti-racism projects. The federation stated it would appeal the rulings.
Gavi's suspension directly impacts England's immediate schedule. He is ruled out of Spain's visit to Wembley Stadium for a Nations League fixture on September 26. This gives Gareth Southgate's side a potential advantage as they prepare for a key match. England currently sit top of their World Cup qualifying group with seven points from three games, one point clear of Croatia. The brawl erupted after a tense final where Argentina was largely outplayed.
