Kyle Walker Announces England Retirement
England defender Kyle Walker has announced his retirement from international football, citing a desire to focus on his club career. Walker, 36, made the decision after a glittering career with the Three Lions, earning 96 caps and featuring at five major tournaments.
Why Walker Retired
Walker said he was 'at ease' with his decision, hoping it would lead to an extended club career, similar to that enjoyed by former team-mate James Milner. Milner retired from international football in 2016 but went on to play top-flight club football for another 10 years, setting the record for the most appearances in the Premier League era.
What Comes Next for Walker?
Walker will now focus on his club career with Burnley, who start their Championship campaign at home against West Ham on Sunday. The 36-year-old played in 36 of the Clarets' 38 top-flight games in 2025-26 and hopes his decision not to play international football will prolong his club career.
Recent Form
England finished third in this summer's World Cup in North America, although injuries to Reece James and Tino Livramento led to midfielder Declan Rice having to step in as an emergency right-back, with central defenders Ezri Konsa and Jarell Quansah also deputising. Walker said he was not expecting a call from Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, but was happy to have had the opportunity to represent his country.
