Cole Palmer Reflects on World Cup Omission and Chelsea Season Ahead
Cole Palmer, an England international footballer, recently discussed his experience of missing out on the World Cup and how it has motivated him for the upcoming season with Chelsea. The 24-year-old attacker was left off Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, a decision that he acknowledges was difficult to accept.
Falling Asleep During England vs. Mexico
Palmer admitted that staying awake during England’s match against Mexico in the World Cup was challenging, as the game started at an ungodly hour of 2am UK time. He managed to stay up for half-time but ultimately fell asleep. Despite this, Palmer remained a fan and watched other games from afar.
Motivation and New Manager
Having been left out of the World Cup squad has given Palmer extra motivation going into next season with Chelsea. "Naturally (being left out has given him more hunger going into next season). It's like anything. If someone told you that you're essentially not good enough to get in the squad, then you're going to think, 'like, alright, whatever' then, try to go that extra harder," he said.
Palmer also expressed his appreciation for new manager Xabi Alonso, describing him as a "breath of fresh air." After a difficult season marred by injuries, Palmer is eager to return to form under Alonso's guidance. He mentioned having had seven weeks off during the summer, which was much needed after his most challenging campaign since joining Chelsea in 2023.
Surgery and New Teammate
Palmer considered surgery for a troubling groin injury but ultimately decided against it. He also discussed his reaction to being left out of the World Cup squad, saying that manager Xabi Alonso knew about his situation and messaged him with supportive words.
Welcoming Morgan Rogers
The news of teammate Morgan Rogers joining Chelsea from Aston Villa for £117 million was a positive one for Palmer. Both players share a similar goal celebration, which Palmer has trademarked legally. "We have not spoken about it. It is one of them. He does it. I do it. I have trademarked it so if he tries to do anything, he will have the bailiffs at his door,” Palmer joked.
Palmer expressed his happiness over Rogers joining Chelsea and believes that their friendship will benefit both players on the field.
